CIPS Toronto Parnters with InternetSecure to Offer e-commerce on Web

December 17, 1999-The Canadian Information Processing Society’s (CIPS) Toronto chapter has teamed up with InternetSecure Inc. to offer an online credit card payment option on the CIPS Toronto web site, http://www.cipstoronto.ca. Members can now use credit cards to register for CIPS events such as the dinner meetings, golf events and the Christmas party.

"As IT professionals, we should be seen as leading the e-commerce initiative, especially given that we are responsible for initiating and implementing e-comm for our respective companies," said William Pearson, Toronto CIPS President. "We selected InternetSecure because of its verification and fraud detection technology and because of its ability to process Canadian dollar transactions."

InternetSecure is Canada’s largest non-financial service provider of on-line merchant status and secure Internet credit card payment solutions. Its security and risk management system has been approved by numerous Canadian and American financial institutions as a result of a rigorous approval process including assessment of InternetSecure’s technical infrastructure, data-handling methods and risk assessment software.

The system consists of a high-end firewall, secure servers and SSL (Secure Socket Layers) encryption (128-bit in Canada and the US) to keep client information safe and secure. The company uses propriety credit card transaction software and proprietary risk-management, or fraud detection, software. This software kicks in whenever suspicious user activities (such as trying a series of different credit card numbers) are detected.

InternetSecure has a secure connection into the banking network. Transaction information does not go back out over the Internet once it is sent to InternetSecure. Credit card and transaction information is stored off-site, using InternetSecure’s own proprietary merchant accounting/payment system. The information is also stored by the banks.

Online commerce will make it easier for CIPS Toronto members to register for events, allowing members to register at any time of the day or night. CIPS Toronto will continue to find more ways to improve Web-site services for its members.
